In November 2021, The Pizza, Pasta & Italian Food Association decided to hold the first ever National Pizza Week. Pretzel was on hand to spread the word via a fully integrated digital PR and marketing campaign.
Partnerships were forged with market-leading brands in the industry, both Papa Johns and Goodfellas sponsored the event and took ownership of some of the creative ideas we generated.
Analysis of sales data showed a huge rise in vegan options for Papa Johns, which led to a focus on vegan offerings, and a campaign for a new fully representative pizza emoji – #EmojiKneaded.
We also teamed up with industry experts to share tips on how to cook the perfect pizza at home, turning your oven into a pizza oven as well as spreading the word on the pizza entrepreneurs that are ‘earning a crust’ through making pizza.
In just one week we were able to secure 438 pieces of coverage and 78 links to the dedicated National Pizza Week website. The average domain authority was 55, demonstrating the quality of the new sites to feature the campaign.
Pretzel also staged a full social takeover of the association’s social media channels which allowed us to engage with numerous brands and thousands of followers, as well as managing the community and ensuring clear, consistent messaging to maximise the reach of our creative content.

The national membership body engaged Pretzel’s food and drink PR team to breathe new life into the campaign and generate quality national, regional and broadcast media coverage. The key message? A call to action to encourage consumers to go out and grab a sandwich on the go.
Part of our strategy was to engage high profile brands in the event and work in partnership with them on creating sharable, newsworthy content. This coupled with a series of creative digital PR campaigns examining all aspects of sandwich making/buying ensured a far-reaching multi-platform food digital PR strategy.
During the week of British Sandwich Week, we achieved 123 pieces of coverage with an average domain rating of 58.
